PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell on Thursday announced indictments against three suspects over crimes against law enforcement that happened on the same night, just hours apart.
Prosecutors said Darelle Belle, 51, was charged with 21 counts of aggravated assault after allegedly shooting a DPS trooper, and hurting three others during a SWAT operation in central Phoenix on Feb. 5.
Belle was also charged with one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm and three counts of misconduct involving weapons, Mitchell said.
The county attorney also announced the indictment against Valarie Marie Corona, 39, who was accused of pointing a gun at Phoenix police in Maryvale just hours earlier. Detectives said they were working to serve a search warrant in connection with a homicide case.
Prosecutors said Corona is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. They expressed concern about her bond amount, ultimately set at $25,000, after the county attorney’s office wanted Corona held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
“One of my priorities as county attorney has been to fight for meaningful bond amounts, especially in cases involving repeat offenders, violence, and weapons,” Mitchell said in a news conference. “Too often, people are arrested and released before the officer who took them to jail finishes his shift. And we’ve got to stop this revolving door.”
On that same night, authorities said Gabriel Leon shot at Chandler police while running away following a traffic stop, prompting officers to return fire.
“When they stopped the truck, Gabriel Leon took off running, firing a shot into the air while doing so. The chase continued for a few blocks before it ended with an officer involved shooting,” Mitchell said. “Leon is indicted on one count of aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and misconduct involving weapons.”
