Rory McIlroy shoots 66 to take clubhouse lead Saturday at the Genesis Scottish Open
Rory McIlroy is in the driver’s seat in the UK once again.
The World No. 2 shot 4-under 66 in Saturday’s third round at the Genesis Scottish Open to take the lead in the clubhouse at 11 under just before 2:20 p.m. ET. Chris Gotterup was still on the golf course at 11 under with four holes to play.

McIlroy made five birdies to go along with a lone blemish in the form of a bogey on the par-4 7th. He was 3 under on the three par 5s at The Renaissance Club.
If McIlroy can close the deal Sunday, it’d be his second win at the Genesis Scottish Open in his last three starts there. He was victorious in 2023 when he finished one shot ahead of Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who then won it in 2024.
Not to mention the momentum he’d carry into next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, McIlroy’s home country. All eyes will be on him Sunday.

Don’t look over your shoulder, Chris Gotterup.

Rory McIlroy is within one after rolling in this birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole. He’s 4 under for the day and appears to be full steam ahead, looking for his second win in his last three starts at the Genesis Scottish Open.
Rory McIlroy nearly holes out from bunker at the Genesis Scottish open
Rory sits in a tie for second with Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge at 10 under, two shots behind Chris Gotterup. This shot on the par-4 15th would have got him one closer, but the golf gods had other ideas.
Tough break, but an easy par for the World No. 2. He’s right in the mix.
Ludvig Aberg makes mess of 13th hole, cards untimely triple bogey at Scottish Open
Ludvig Aberg was cruising right along in his third round at the Genesis Scottish Open. He was 3 under through 11 holes and just one shot behind solo leader Chris Gotterup.

That was until he made bogey on the 12th and triple bogey on No. 13 to drop four shots. Aberg hit his tee shot in the fairway and had 203 yards left to the hole on the 13th when he yanked his approach into the penalty area. After taking a drop, he hit his fourth shot into the rough and it took him three more to get up-and-down.
His round and potentially his hopes of winning have been completely derailed, as he now sits in a tie for eighth at 7 under, five shots off Gotterup’s lead.
Rory McIlroy pours in birdie to get within two shots of the lead
Before he heads to Royal Portrush and attempts to win The Open Championship in his home country of Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy is looking to secure yet another PGA Tour victory in a different part of the UK. And he’s in position to do so.

The reigning Masters champ rolled in this birdie putt on the par-3 14th — his fourth birdie of Saturday’s third round — to get within two shots of solo leader Chris Gotterup, who’s at 12 under as of 1:25 p.m. ET.
Rory has been under scrutiny in recent months for his performance and behavior since winning the Masters, and he admitted that he’s felt flat after accomplishing such a monumental milestone. But a win at The Renaissance Club could right the ship heading down the stretch of the 2025 season.
Scottie Scheffler makes 15 pars, shoots 69 in the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler reentered the spotlight in Scotland after taking a few weeks off, and he’s had a solid but somewhat pedestrian week thus far. Scheffler made one bogey, two birdies and 15 pars en route to a 1-under 69 in the third round on Saturday. It may not seem up to snuff for what we’ve come to expect from Scottie, but he’s still 6 under for the tournament and tied for 15th early Saturday afternoon.

If he can go low early Sunday and post a good number, you just never know.
Either way, it’s a good tune-up as he heads to Royal Portrush in search of his fourth career major title and first at the Open Championship.

Chris Gotterup holds steady at the top
With several superstars on his heels, World No. 158 Chris Gotterup is holding steady at the top of the leaderboard. The 25-year-old from Maryland is 1 under through seven holes in his third round, highlighted by back-to-back birdies holes five and six.
He rolled in a 14-foot putt for birdie on No. 5, but he barely needed his flatstick on No. 6.
He sits at 12 under for the tournament as of 12:30 p.m. ET, leading by two over a four-way between Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Jake Knapp and Marco Penge, who are all 10 under.
Gotterup fired a blistering 9-under 61 on Friday to take the outright lead into the weekend, and despite all those big names looking to chase him down, he’s fending them off so far in search of his second career win on Tour. He was victorious at the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic.

Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark join tie for the lead
World No. 9 Ludvig Aberg and 2023 U.S. Open Champion Wyndham Clark have joined Chris Gotterup in a tie for the lead at 10 under as of 11:40 a.m. ET. They are two shots clear of an eight-way tie for second.
Clark is scorching hot today. He’s made birdies on seven of the 13 holes he’s played in the third round, offset by a pair of bogeys on Nos. 1 and 11. The 31-year-old from Denver is seeking his fourth career win on the PGA Tour and his first since early 2024.
Aberg, meanwhile, has been a beacon of consistency at The Renaissance Club all week and he’s continuing that trend Saturday, going bogey-free on his first five holes with a pair of birdies. The young superstar from Sweden is trying to win his second PGA Tour event of the season. His first came at the Genesis Invitational. Something about that title sponsor apparently brings out his best.
Rory McIlory, other big names highlight congested leaderboard Saturday at the Genesis Scottish Open
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is off to another solid start at The Renaissance Club on Saturday. He’s 1 under through 5 holes and sits just two strokes behind Chris Gotterup’s lead at 10 under as of 11:15 a.m. ET. Rory won this event in 2023, finishing with a one-shot lead over Robert MacIntyre, who then proceeded to win in 2024.

MacIntyre made the cut on the number, but there are several other big names who are in contention at the Scottish Open. World No. 9 Ludvig Aberg is 9 under, one behind Gotterup, while World No. 10 Sepp Straka is tied with Rory, Wyndham Clark, Jake Knapp and Nick Taylor at 8 under.
It’s shaping up to be a fun weekend of golf across the pond.

Who’s not in the British Open yet but can get in with a strong Scottish Open?
The top three finishers in the Genesis Scottish Open not already in the 2025 British Open will get the final three spots. After 36 holes, here’s who’s in best position:

Chris Gotterup, Scottish Open leader at 11 under. He doesn’t need to win Sunday, he just needs to be among the top three finishers.
Matti Schmid, Keith Mitchell and Jake Knapp are tied for sixth at 7 under. Those are the next three not already in sitting in good position but only two of them can go to Royal Portrush, assuming Gotterup maintains his place ahead of them.
