Vt. woman accused in car theft, hit-and-run in Northern NY

  • February 26, 2026

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Police say a Vermont woman was drunk when she stole a car in Northern New York, hit another vehicle with it on the Northway and then took off.

It started just before 6 p.m. Wednesday at the T.J. Maxx in Plattsburgh.

New York troopers say Sunshine Gagnon, 42, of Highgate, stole a car from the parking lot there and was speeding away on Interstate 87 north when she sideswiped another vehicle and kept going.

Police later found the stolen car on the shoulder of the highway in Champlain and took Gagnon into custody. They say she showed signs of impairment, failed field sobriety tests and refused a breath test.

Gagnon was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, driving while intoxicated and multiple traffic violations.

She was released and is due in court next month.
