  • February 27, 2026

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Strong southerly winds are on the way to northwestern Vermont and northern New York, with gusts building Friday afternoon and reaching their strongest point Saturday morning. We’re tracking the potential for isolated power outages across the region.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Wind gusts will start relatively calm Friday afternoon around 10-15 mph but will steadily increase throughout the evening. By Friday night, gusts could reach 30-35 mph, and the wind continues to strengthen overnight.

The strongest winds arrive Saturday morning between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., when gusts are forecast to peak at 35-45 mph with locally higher gusts possible. Strong wind gusts will continue in the Champlain Valley through the morning and will finally begin to decrease early Saturday afternoon.

IMPACTS:

Isolated power outages are possible Saturday morning when the wind is strongest, particularly in the Champlain Valley and northern New York. The areas of greatest concern include the northern Champlain Valley and the northern slopes of the Adirondacks.

It’s a good idea to secure any outdoor items before this evening — bring in trash cans, patio furniture, and anything else that could get blown around. Charge your devices this evening and have your flashlights ready in case of outages early tomorrow morning

The positive note, if you’re not a fan of the cold, this southerly wind will be bringing warmer air up to us for tomorrow. Highs will be well above average in the 40s across the region. It’s going to be gusty, but very spring-like!
