A trio of permits for the 1000 block of West Jackson Boulevard in the West Loop are a good sign that a construction start could be just around the corner for 1016 West Jackson. A 380-unit apartment tower from Mavrek Development, referenced on their website as 1000 West Jackson, was approved for the site by the Chicago Plan Commission and the City Council back in summer 2024.

We played peek-a-boo with a pending caisson permit for much of 2025, with it disappearing once and returning in July, only to go missing once again in November. But now it’s back in the Chicago Data Portal, and this time it’s accompanied by demolition permits for the five-story building at 1016 West Jackson and the two-story building at 1010 West Jackson. Both of those documents hit the portal on February 25, with the wrecking reviews for each tagged as “incomplete.”
As for the caisson permit, it’s assigned to the address of 1022 West Jackson, and it came back to the portal on March 3 with its affordable housing hold now designated as “released” but with a few other tasks yet to be completed. What we know from that permit so far is that Skender is designated as the general contractor, but no concrete contractor is named as yet. The project is designed by Eckenhoff Saunders.
The 25-story tower is to include units ranging from studio apartments to three-bedroom layouts. The three-level podium will hold 163 parking spaces and 23,000 square feet of retail. Long reported to be an Aldi grocery store, that plan is confirmed by Aldi signage included in the most recent renderings. A new grocery store would be a boon to this area of the West Loop.
