PHOENIX — A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after a pedestrian was killed Saturday night in Phoenix, authorities said.

The collision happened in the area of around 11:20 p.m., the Phoenix Police Department said.

Juan Vasquez, 46, was found by officers suffering from critical injuries, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

What led up to the pedestrian DUI collision?

The driver was headed northbound on 83rd Avenue when he hit Vasquez, who was attempting to cross 83rd Avenue just south of Camelback Road, police said.

Detectives said the driver was under the influence. He was issued a citation and processed for DUI.

The investigation is ongoing.
