WITN reports an unwanted visitor to a Hyde County school was trying to crash a summer reading program.

Hyde County Schools said a 5-foot alligator was spotted on the campus of Mattamuskeet School. It took up residence at the door to Building 800, which is close to the athletic complex.

While school is out for the summer, there were 20 students on campus for a reading camp. The school system says, fortunately, those activities were in a different building, so there was no severe safety issue for the students.

A staff member kept an eye on the gator until a wildlife biologist arrived and safely removed the reptile.
