TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — A Travis County judge has ruled that Shane James, the man accused of killing six people across Austin and San Antonio in December of 2023, is now competent to stand trial .
James is charged with capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated assault. He is accused of killing his parents in San Antonio before driving to Austin, where he allegedly killed four more people. Three others were left wounded, including two police officers.
Local authorities took James into custody on December 5th, 2023– the same day as the string of shootings in Austin.
In October of 2024, James was ruled incompetent to stand trial and ordered to be committed to a mental health hospital for treatment.

A statement from the Travis County District Attorney Spokesperson states, “Our hearts continue to break for the victims, their families, and our community impacted by these acts of violence. We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their diligent work on these cases and look forward to continuing to fight for justice for the victims and their families.”
According to Travis County Court Records, James is set to appear for a court hearing on August 25th.
