Phoenix police shot and killed a man early March 15 after a barricade standoff at a west Phoenix apartment complex that began as a domestic violence call, authorities said.

Officers responded around 6 a.m. to reports of a fight at an apartment near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road, according to Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez, Phoenix Police Department spokesperson.

Officers found a woman and her young daughter trapped behind a locked back patio gate and used a prybar to force it open, Fernandez said.

Fernandez provided an initial account of the shooting during a noon briefing.

According to Fernandez, a man inside the apartment cocked a gun, which led officers to take cover behind nearby vehicles. The man later fired multiple rounds from inside the apartment and shot at a police drone, damaging it, she said.

The standoff lasted more than an hour, during which the man fired several rounds out of the apartment’s windows toward officers. Officers returned fire, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was not immediately identified.

No other injuries were reported.

Police did not immediately say how many officers fired their weapons or how many rounds were fired.

Fernandez said the call was being investigated as a domestic violence situation.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety will investigate the officer-involved shooting, Fernandez said, which is standard practice when Phoenix officers are involved in a fatal shooting.

It is the 14th fatal police shooting in Arizona this year, according to Arizona Republic records. Four of those have involved Phoenix police.
