PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A toddler is recovering in the hospital after he was pulled from a backyard pool at a central Phoenix home on Monday evening.
Just before 7 p.m., Phoenix firefighters received reports of a drowning at a home near 15th and Glendale avenues. Firefighters say a 2-year-old boy was found in a backyard pool unconscious.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller says crews arrived and found the mother, who is a nurse, doing CPR on the boy. Firefighters took over and rushed the boy to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
Capt. Keller says as firefighters transferred care to hospital staff, the child was breathing on his own. As of 9:30 p.m., police said his injuries were no longer life-threatening.
“That is a great sign, but as of now, we’re still waiting for updates from the hospital,” the fire captain said.

It is unknown how long the boy was in the water. Video from Arizona’s Family news chopper shows a fence around the pool.
Capt. Keller is reminding parents and guardians about the safety of watching children around pools as summertime approaches.
“The first thing I want to talk about is how imperative CPR is. It probably saved this child’s life or is going to make a difference. Please, please, get certified in CPR,” he explained.
The fire captain also stressed the importance of having barriers around pools and having an adult around children at all times.
“These barriers need to be no less than four feet high and be self-closing,” he said. “Please, please, watch your children around water. We are getting to the warmer weather this weekend, we are going to be outside. Please, there is no replace for proper adult supervision.”
Phoenix police have taken over the investigation and are working to determine what led up to the incident. Investigators say at this time, no suspicious circumstances were found.
