Fans of the Dune franchise are getting their first peak at Dune: Part Three, with Warner Bros and Legendary releasing the first trailer Tuesday. The film, which has a December 18, 2026 release date, sees Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Javier Bardem back, with Robert Pattinson and Anya Taylor-Joy among the new additions to the cast.
On Monday, character posters were released showing the key players, including the above as well as Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa and newcomer Isaach de Bankolé.
The trailer from the movie, which takes place 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two, opens with Zendaya’s Chani asking Chalamet’s Paul: “If we have a girl, what will we name her?” If it’s a boy, she says they should name him Leto (after Duke Leto Atreides, Paul’s father) because then “he would have the wisdom of his grandfather.”
Then, amid scenes of vicious battle, we see new castmember Pattinson’s character of Scytale, with his platinum blonde buzz cut.
Paul, also sporting a buzz cut now, runs to the top of a plinth, high above a massive, cheering crowd. Then we see him facing an opponent in the desert. “I’m not afraid to die,” we hear him say in voice-over as he grips a dagger, “but I must not die yet.” In the final clip, Chani steels herself and runs toward an invisible adversary.
Dune is Legendary’s expansive, multi-format science fiction universe based on Frank Herbert’s Hugo Award-winning novel series. The collection has included two feature films, 2021’s Dune: Part One and last year’s Dune: Part Two, which earned a combined $1.12 billion at the global box office and won eight Oscars from 15 nominations, including Best Picture noms for both.
Denis Villeneuve has directed all three pics, which he adapted with screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Eric Roth also co-wrote on the first installment).
The universe’s most recent entry is prequel TV series Dune: Prophecy, from Lost writer-producer Alison Schapker and set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides. The series premiered on HBO and Max in November.
