The warehouse giant has struck a deal that is described as the first Costco to open on tribal land in the United States.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — A new Costco warehouse is coming to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, described by leaders as a milestone project along the busy Loop 101 corridor in Scottsdale. The store was approved on March 11 and will be built near Pima and Camelback roads on roughly 21.5 acres of SRPMIC land.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is a sovereign tribal nation bordering Scottsdale, made up of the Akimel O’Odham (Pima) and Xalychidom Piipaash (Maricopa), with deep farming roots and a fast-growing entertainment and business corridor along the Loop 101.

Plans call for the 162,000-square-foot warehouse to be designed to serve both nearby neighborhoods and the heavy traffic that moves through the area. The warehouse will feature an expanded ready-to-eat section with grab-and-go family meals and an updated Costco food court lineup alongside Costco’s beloved hot dog and drink combo.

The development extends a partnership between the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Scottsdale-based Mullin 360, the team behind the Scottsdale Auto Show at Salt River. Community leaders say the project is expected to provide a significant sales tax boost to help fund infrastructure while bringing new jobs and services to the broader East Valley. A formal groundbreaking is planned for June 2026, and SRPMIC has set up a hotline for residents and businesses with questions at (480) 362-7727, as well as an email contact at SRAS@srpmic-nsn.gov.

It is the first Costco on tribal land in the United States, according to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and project partners. However, it is not the first Costco on Indigenous land in North America overall, because a Costco opened in 2020 on the Tsuutʼina Nation just outside Calgary, Alberta, which was described as the first Costco on First Nation land in North America.
