SAN MARCOS, Texas — This weekend marks seven years since a devastating fire at a San Marcos apartment complex claimed the lives of five students.

Zachary Sutterfield, a survivor who suffered burns on nearly 70 percent of his body, is commemorating the anniversary to honor those who lost their lives.

Sutterfield, who jumped out of a burning apartment window during the blaze, has undergone more than 33 surgeries.

Despite the challenges, he has chosen to persevere. He has since earned his bachelor’s degree and serves as an ambassador for Sons of the Flag, an organization that supports burn survivors.

Now, Sutterfield is training alongside his mother to become a fire prevention educator, continuing his mission to help others.

As for the arson case, police have yet to take anyone into custody for the crime.
