ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team split Saturday’s doubleheader with Washington University in St. Louis. The Maroons rode their dominant pitching to win game one before dropping game two.

Game 1: UChicago 3, #10 WashU 1

UChicago opened the day with a 3-1 victory over the Bears. The Maroons wasted no time getting on the board, putting a run on the board in the first as Braden Jirovec singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a double play off the bat of Michael Gladden.

They added to the lead in the third when Erik Rindner delivered the biggest swing of the game, sending the ball down the left-field line for a solo home run to make it 2-0. UChicago continued to apply pressure throughout the afternoon, finishing with 10 hits.

The Maroons extended the lead in the sixth inning, when Nathan Bae singled and later scored on a WashU error, making the lead 3-0. That cushion proved important as the Bears answered in the bottom half but the Maroons held them to just one on the board.

On the mound, UChicago’s staff combined for a standout performance. Starter Matthew Richert allowed just one hit over 4.1 scoreless innings while striking out five. The bullpen held firm as Lucien Reed earned the win and Charlie Hahn closed the door in the ninth for his first save of the year.

Game 2: #10 WashU 12, UChicago 2

The Maroons struggled in the second game of the day.

UChicago jumped ahead early, plating two runs in the second inning. Harrison Belden slammed a single down the right-field line and a few plays later, Jack Sharp scored for a 2-0 lead.

The momentum quickly swung in favor of the Bears in the third as they tallied on four runs to make it a 4-2 game over the Maroons.

The Bears kept the pressure on in the fourth, adding three more runs. WashU tacked on additional runs in the sixth and broke the game open in the eighth to push the final margin to 12-2.

UChicago’s offense, which collected seven hits. Belden and Gladden each had two-hit games, but the Maroons were unable to string together rallies after the early innings
