Jannik Sinner picked up his first Wimbledon title in 2025, defeating his biggest rival in the final.

35 days after Sinner lost a five-set thriller to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, the pair met again, in the final of Wimbledon.

Not to be denied this time around, Sinner fought back from a set down to defeat Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, winning his fourth Grand Slam.

The world number one took in the applause from the fans on Centre Court after the match, as they celebrated the new Wimbledon champion.

Weighing in with his thoughts, Sinner’s Davis Cup captain, Filippo Volandri, has given his verdict on how fans treated the Italian at Wimbledon.

Filippo Volandri says Wimbledon fans treated Jannik Sinner ‘very differently’ to those at Roland Garros

During an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Volandri highlighted the differences between the crowds at Wimbledon and the French Open.

“The fans were very different from those in Paris, where there was so much support for [Carlos] Alcaraz,” said Volandri.

“Here, at first, there was rightly a slight preference for the Spaniard, but then it became clear they were rooting for the match and the spectacle.

“Towards the end, however, the support for our champion really rose loudly.”

Volandri proceeded to praise his star player, commenting on the effort he makes with younger Italian tennis hopefuls.

“When Jannik [Sinner] is on the court, when he has to play a match, he’s a war machine. But when he’s in Davis Cup, or when other Italians are playing, he’s fantastic because he always makes himself available,” he said.

“This is also his greatness: he doesn’t put himself up there as number one, but always tries to help in his own way with a word, a stimulus, a question, as he did in London with [Jacopo] Vasami and [Pierluigi] Basile.

“As a coach as well as the captain of the national team, it makes me happy that everyone is like this.”

Expanding on the camaraderie within Italian tennis today, Volandri revealed who treated Sinner’s elbow injury at SW19 after the 23-year-old split with his physio and fitness trainer on the eve of the tournament.

“We’ve done a good job of making ourselves available to the players, creating a climate of trust and collaboration. A virtuous circle has been created that’s doing everyone good,” he said.

“We’re all together, and the players are together too. We’re a great group, and I’m also talking about the osteopaths and physiotherapists.

“Jannik treated his elbow with Claudio Zanetti, who is one of our specialists. We’re functioning well at all levels.”

Volandri will hope his team continues to function at the highest level later this year, when they search for a third consecutive Davis Cup title.

Filippo Volandri says the plan is for Italy to win another Davis Cup title in the next three years

Outlining his plans for the Davis Cup, Volandri suggested how long he expects to wait before Italy wins another title.

“The plan is to win a third title within the next three years, always playing at home,” he said.

“We have such a rich and diverse team that when someone doesn’t make it, others are doing well.

“Even at Wimbledon, we had the early exits of [Matteo] Berrettini and [Lorenzo] Musetti, but we balanced that with the good news of three Italians in the round of 16, a resurgent [Lorenzo] Sonego, a [Flavio] Cobolli in the quarterfinals, and Jannik’s title. We won Wimbledon, guys.”

There are currently six Italian players ranked inside the ATP top 50, giving Volandri a wealth of options to choose from.
