A man is recovering in the hospital after being shot while burying a pet in a backyard overnight, according to Houston police.
The shooting happened just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the 7700 block of Belgard Street in southeast Houston.
Police say the victim, an adult male, was in the backyard with his younger brother burying their recently deceased guinea pig when a neighbor reportedly came outside and opened fire, striking the older brother in the torso.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Officers secured the scene and surrounded the neighboring residence where the shots were believed to have come from. Police say everyone inside the home complied and came out peacefully.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting, though all parties are reportedly cooperating.
