Adam Sandler has appeared in a wide variety of comedy movies, but he has only done very few sequels. One of those, Happy Gilmore 2, is hitting Netflix this month. If the movie is well-received, it could lead to another Sandler classic getting a new sequel.

To promote the sequel, which comes out on July 25, director Kyle Newacheck spoke about Happy Gilmore 2 in a new interview with ComicBook.com. The filmmaker shared his opinion that there are several other Sandler films that could benefit from having a sequel made after Happy Gilmore 2. Newacheck cited Little Nicky as one in particular that is ripe for a sequel, given how much Sandler continues to do the character’s unique voice.

As Happy Gilmore 2 Approaches, Adam Sandler’s Forgotten 26-Year-Old Comedy Drama Becomes a Streaming Hit

A few years after the original Happy Gilmore premiered, an Adam Sandler comedy film hit theaters, and it’s making a run on streaming decades later.

As Newacheck said, “Here’s one that I think would be interesting now. Because [Sandler] was always doing the Little Nicky voice on set like so just hearing it, I was like, I bet that would be excellent now too. I bet we could do something really crazy with Little Nicky. I think there’s something like, you know, Happy Gilmore is grounded and he’s able to comment on the world in this movie and kind of send its themes out, but I feel like Little Nicky in the fantastic realm would be really able to call attention to some crazy s— going on in the world right now.”

Directed by Steven Brill, Little Nicky was released in 2000. The dark comedy starred Sandler as the titular character, the son of Satan (Harvey Keitel) and an angel (Reese Witherspoon) hoping to bring his two brothers (Rhys Ifans, Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr.) back to Hell in order to save the world. Many other notable stars were featured, including Patricia Arquette, Rodney Dangerfield, Michael McKean, Ozzy Osbourne, Carl Weathers, Henry WInkler, Rob Schneider, and Quentin Tarantino.

Happy Gilmore 2 Adds Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween Co-Star to Cast

Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore sequel at Netflix continues to bolster its star-studded cast with a fellow comedy veteran.

The film was not met with strong reviews, and it is scored at a low 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also bombed in theaters, earning less than $60 million with a budget that exceeded $80 million. The movie was even nominated for several Razzies, including a Worst Actor nod for Sandler. Despite this reception, the film would garner a cult following in subsequent years, with many of Sandler’s fans feeling that it was an underrated classic that didn’t get the attention it deserved at the time. If that’s the case, a sequel could potentially be a bigger success.
