SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The San Antonio Zoo is bringing gorillas back for the first time in 30 years, this time with a new immersive habitat.
The new habitat, called Congo Falls, will set the stage for “an extraordinary new chapter in wildlife conservation, education, and an unparalleled guest experience,” according to a press release.
It will be home to eight western lowland gorillas: a bachelor troop of four male gorillas and a family group of one silverback and three females.

Congo Falls will encompass two acres and feature three separate and unique gorilla areas, the zoo says, as well as a 30 foot waterfall with a pool and a gorilla tower more than 70 feet tall. The zoo says the gorilla tower will be the tallest in the world.
The zoo says that the habitat design will allow for 360-degree views of gorillas and feature overhead walkways for both guests and gorillas.
“Congo Falls is more than a habitat, it’s a symbol of our commitment to animal wellbeing, incredible guest experiences, and being world leaders in innovative zoological habitat design,” said Tim Morrow, President and CEO of San Antonio Zoo. ” We are excited for the guests that visit us from San Antonio, South Texas and around the world to once again be able to view and learn more about this incredible species at San Antonio Zoo.”
