A teenage boy was wounded Thursday in a shooting in an alley near his home in Los Angeles.

The shooting in the 4100 block of South Hillcrest Drive, near Coliseum Street in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood, was reported to the Los Angeles Fire Department at 5:43 a.m. Thursday, a spokeswoman said.

One person, reported to be a 14-year-old boy, was in fair to serious condition when taken to a hospital, the spokeswoman said, adding that the injury appeared to be non-life-threatening.

The boy, who said he was shot in a back alley near his house, gave police a license plate number but a check of the tag came back as a lost or stolen vehicle, a Los Angeles Police Department officer said.

The original call came to police at 5 a.m. from a woman who said her son had been shot in a leg while outside their home and she had brought him inside, according to the officer.

Firefighters had to wait for police to make sure the scene was safe before they could enter.

Officers canvassed the area and found no suspects and no weapon.
