Second body recovered from Phoenix-area canal within a week

Firefighters said a body was recovered from a Phoenix-area canal — the second such incident within a week.

Phoenix Fire was dispatched around 5:45 p.m. on April 3 to Third Avenue and Hazelwood Street for a report of a body in the water, where firefighters found an unconscious adult who was not breathing, department spokesperson Capt. Todd Keller said in an email.

“Unfortunately the patient was beyond resuscitation,” Keller said in his email.

Phoenix police took over the investigation from there, Keller added.

Police did not immediately respond as to whether foul play was suspected.

Elliah Schurz, 28, was found dead in a Scottsdale canal March 28 after having been reported missing six days earlier from the Salt River-Pima Maricopa Indian Community.
