Jacksonville sheriff picking up order at Home Depot also nabs man accused of stealing

  • April 8, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters was at the right place at the right time on Wednesday while he was shopping at a Southside Home Depot.

JSO said the sheriff was picking up an order at the customer service counter of the hardware store on Atlantic Boulevard when an employee flagged him down.

A man was attempting to leave with roughly $500 in merchandise, JSO said.

Waters and a retired robbery detective took off after the man on foot. When the sheriff reached for the suspect’s sweatshirt, he says the man twisted free and kept running. Waters ran after him to the edge of the parking lot, where he took him to the ground.

Pena put up a struggle, JSO said, but with the retired detective’s help, the two got him into handcuffs. He was charged with theft and resisting.

JSO said he also had two active warrants for theft as well.

“Just because I was elected sheriff doesn’t mean I’m no longer a policeman,” Waters said, noting that he would always do what was needed to protect the city.
