Rotary puts on Wine and Food Festival
The Rotary Club of Carlsbad Wine and Food Festival Fundraiser is from 4 to 9 p.m. July 26 at Viasat East Pavilion. The annual event benefits nine charities and features wine sampling from more than 28 wineries across San Diego County, Paso Robles, Temecula, Santa Ynez and the Sierra Foothills. There will also be craft cocktails, beers and bites from local restaurants. The Dance Party begins at 7 p.m. with a DJ. Batiquitos Lagoon holds a presentation at 10 a.m. July 26 on “When Humans and Wildlife Conflict” by Ian Keith, wildlife biologist and human-wildlife conflict specialist. International youth baseball tournament at park
Carlsbad Youth Baseball will host the 2025 PONY-13 World Series starting at 9 a.m. July 25-29 at Aviara Community Park. The Del Mar racetrack’s 86th summer season kicks off on July 18 and runs through Sept. 7. Here’s a lineup of some events:
Opening Day: Festivities on July 18 include the Opening Day Hats Contest, where attendees can show off their style, and The Party, a trackside celebration featuring world-class DJs, craft beer and cocktail bars, photo booths and more.
Del Mar Beer Festival: The event from 1 to 5 p.m. July 19 for ages 21 and older features a sampling from more than 50 local and regional beers, ciders and seltzers. Foundation for Women Warriors hosts documentary
Local nonprofit Foundation for Women Warriors will host an online screening of “The Hello Girls” at 4 p.m. July 30. The documentary features historic film footage of America’s first female soldiers courtesy of the National Archives and rare photos from family archives. In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps deployed 223 women to France as telephone operators to help in the Great War. By war’s end, they had connected over 26 million calls and were recognized by Gen. John J. Pershing for their service. But when they returned home, the U.S. government told them they were never soldiers. A group of student filmmakers who are Canyon Crest Academy Envision Cinema alumni have created a short film, “Dogboy,” and seek community support. The film’s writer-director is Yezy Suh. The film tells a story shaped by her own experiences growing up as a Korean-American in San Diego. Suh hopes that the film will “amplify marginalized voices, highlight the nuances of the Asian-American experience and create spaces where people can see themselves reflected, understood, and connected through their shared stories.” Filming is slated for July 25 to July 27 in San Diego. Ovation Theatre stages ‘Chicago’
