WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (KUTV) — The Utah Grizzlies announced Sunday that the organization has begun the process of selling the team, adding that it could lead to the team’s relocation.
Utah’s minor league hockey team could be leaving the state after nearly three decades in the community. The decision to sell the franchise came after the death of former owner Dave Elmore in 2023 and the declining health of Co-Owner Donna Tuttle.
“The family’s ability to remain actively involved in team operations has understandably diminished,” a Utah Grizzlies statement read. “Their devotion to community-centered sports and the stewardship of the Grizzlies has left a lasting impact on Utah’s hockey landscape.”

The Grizzlies will compete in Utah for the 2025-2026 season. It is unclear if the team will compete in Utah the following season, as the franchise has not been sold.
The statement, which was titled “A Message to our Devoted Fans,” said the owners will be working with the ECHL and stakeholders to explore selling the team, as both will need to formally approve the decision.
“This is an emotional and difficult moment for our family and our organization,” said the Elmore Sports Group, which owns the team. “Utah has been more than a home – it has been part of our identity. But ensuring the Grizzlies have the opportunity to thrive in the future may require new ownership and, potentially, a new home.”
The organization will share updates as the process moves forward.
The Grizzlies first came to Utah in the 1995-1996 season. The team, which competes at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, was the state’s only professional ice hockey team until 2024, when the Smith Entertainment Group purchased an NHL team and rebranded it as Utah Mammoth.
Utah Mammoth, initially known as the Utah Hockey Club, wrapped up its first season in spring 2025, competing at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
“To our loyal fans, our corporate partners, and the leaders of West Valley City – thank you. Your support has made the Grizzlies a proud part of Utah’s story. Whatever the future holds, the legacy of this team will always be rooted in this community,” the Grizzlies’ statement said.
