Lanes on the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway were closed and injuries were reported after a school bus carrying children and an SUV crashed into each other in the city’s Austin neighborhood, Illinois State Police confirmed.
Troopers responded to the crash, in the eastbound lanes of I-290 near the Central Ave. exit, about 8:47 a.m., ISP said.
The driver of the SUV was transported with injuries to a nearby hospital.
According to ISP, the bus was transporting children, but ages were not immediately available. ISP added that no children from the bus were transported to hospitals with injuries.
As of 9:50 a.m., two left lanes on I-290 at Central remained blocked, with TrafficNet reporting “solid traffic” backed up to Mannheim.
The crash scene remained active as officials worked to investigate.
