At the corner of 2300 Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana, you’ll often find at least a dozen people stopping their cars to take pictures—even Prince and Jaafar Jackson have recently visited.
More than 50 years have passed since the Jackson family last lived here, yet his site continues to attract visitors from around the world who come to see where the King of Pop got his start.
The 672-square-foot bungalow was the family’s home from 1950 until they moved to Los Angeles in 1969 after signing with Motown.
Although the house is currently unoccupied, it remains owned by the Jackson family and holds early memories of Michael, where he and his siblings developed their musical talents.
They performed in competitions at Roosevelt High School, won a talent search at Gilroy Stadium, and secured their first regular paid gig at Mr. Lucky’s on the 1100 block of Grant Street.
From their performances at Mr. Lucky’s, they would soon become the Jackson 5. Michael Jackson would go on to perform on the biggest stages worldwide, selling millions of records and becoming one of the most famous musicians of all time.
