North Phoenix post office renamed in honor of fallen police officer

  • April 16, 2026

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A unanimous vote on Capitol Hill Wednesday turned remembrance into action for a fallen Phoenix police officer.

The House approved Rep. Abe Hamadeh’s legislation that renames a north Phoenix post office in honor of Officer Zane T. Coolidge.

It’s located at 19th Avenue and Cactus Road, down the street from Thunderbird High School, where Coolidge graduated.

“Naming this post office in his honor is a small but enduring tribute, a permanent reminder to every Arizonan who walks through those doors of the bravery and devotion of Officer Zane Coolidge and all those who have given their last full measure of devotion and service to our communities,” Hamadeh said on the House floor.

Coolidge and another officer were shot while responding to a reported car break-in at 16th Street and McDowell Road on Sept. 3, 2024. While the other officer was later released, Coolidge died three days later.

“Officer Coolidge’s legacy will not be defined by the day he was taken from us, but by the life he lived and the lives he protected. May this designation ensure that his name and his sacrifice are remembered for generations to come,” Hamadeh said.

The suspect, Saul Bal, was arrested after the shooting and was later indicted on several felony charges, including first-degree murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

A historical marker was created for Coolidge last summer just east of 16th Street, to honor the sacrifice of the fallen officer.
