PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A person has died after being struck by a vehicle on a freeway in north Phoenix overnight.
Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers responded to the two reported crashes around 3:25 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 17 near Union Hills Drive.
A DPS spokesperson said one vehicle crashed into a median wall on the freeway, and when the driver exited that vehicle, he was hit by another vehicle. DPS confirmed that man, who was in his 60s, died at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, DPS said.
Northbound I-17 is closed in the area. Drivers are being diverted off at Union Hills Drive and Yorkshire Road, which has created a lengthy backup. There is no estimated time for the freeway to reopen.
Southbound I-17 traffic headed toward central Phoenix is unaffected.
