PHOENIX – A portion of northbound Interstate 17 in north Phoenix is closed after a driver was struck and killed when he left his vehicle after crashing his car, authorities said.

The driver initially struck a median wall near Yorkshire Drive in a single-vehicle collision around 3:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

He then exited his vehicle and was struck after walking into the traffic lanes, DPS said.

The man, who was in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man was taken to a hospital with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.

Northbound Interstate 17 traffic must exit at Union Hills Drive while the scene is under investigation. The closure includes the ramps from I-17 to both directions of Loop 101.
