PHOENIX – A driver was struck and killed by passing traffic after he crashed on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix and exited his vehicle early Thursday, authorities said.
The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours in the aftermath of the deadly incident.
A driver in his 60s initially struck a median wall near Yorkshire Drive in a single-vehicle collision around 3:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
He then got out and was hit by another vehicle after he walked into the traffic lanes, DPS said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man was taken to a hospital with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.
Northbound Interstate 17 traffic had to exit at Union Hills Drive while the scene was under investigation.
The closure was lifted by 8:30 a.m.
