Jacksonville NAACP supports Councilman Peluso after committee removal, calls action ‘political agenda’

  • July 18, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Branch of the NAACP says it stands with City Councilman Jimmy Peluso after he boycotted a committee meeting, resulting in his removal.

In a statement released on Friday, the NAACP voiced its outrage about what it called the “censorship of city leaders who exercise their right to vote contrary to [Council President Kevin Carrico’s] political agenda.”

Peluso, a Democrat, boycotted the meeting of the Transportation, Energy & Utilities Committee by not showing up because of what he called “inappropriate actions and poor council leadership.”

Carrico, a Republican, said Peluso’s boycott of the meeting showed an “unwillingness to show up and do the work,” so he was removed from the committee.

Peluso also said Councilman Matt Carlucci was reduced to only serve on one committee, which is not usually the norm on the city council.

According to the NAACP, Carrico’s decision was “focused on scoring political points rather than prioritizing the best interests of the city of Jacksonville.”

The organization issued a call for residents to demand that “elected officials uphold their responsibilities to the constituents they serve.”
