National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday

  • April 25, 2026

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Kentuckians have a chance to help save a life this weekend.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day across the nation and several locations across Lexington will be open to accept and dispose of medication.

The Lexington Police Department will be accepting unwanted and expired medication from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kentucky American Water, which is located at 2300 Richmond Road.

Accepted items are: prescription and over-the-counter pills, vitamins, medicated ointments and lotions, and pet medication.

Baptist Health will also be hosting an event at its Lexington Retail Pharmacy from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the north tower of its main campus at 1740 Nicholasville Road.

Hospital officials say the event is part of a spring-cleaning activity of tremendous consequence.

“Spring is a great time to clean out more than just closets — it’s also the perfect opportunity to check your medicine cabinets,” said Shweta Desai, PharmD, system director of community pharmacy at Baptist Health. “Unused or expired medications can lead to accidental poisonings, drug misuse or even environmental harm if not disposed of properly. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day offers a proactive step anyone can take to help prevent substance misuse and protect the health of our communities.”

Safe medication disposal is available at Baptist Health’s retail pharmacy year-round, Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A full list of other locations that offer year-round prescription drug disposal can be found online at www.lexingtonky.gov/med-disposal.
