‘Very significant damage’ at Iran’s Fordow site

US bombs probably caused “very significant” damage to the underground areas of Iran’s Fordow uranium enrichment plant dug into a mountain, though no one can yet tell the extent, UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi said.

He spoke to an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 35-nation Board of Governors on Monday in Vienna.

“Given the explosive payload utilised and the extreme[ly] vibration-sensitive nature of centrifuges, very significant damage is expected to have occurred,” Grossi said.

The rockets made impact in several locations across the country, but no-one was killed.

The ABC has been told the flight, which was expected to help about 80 stranded Australians, will now be cancelled.

Answering more questions from the shelter

By Riley Stuart in Tel Aviv

Some more questions answered.

Julie has asked:

We are flying to Europe via Dubai on Thursday can you see any problem with flights? Thank you.

Lucky you, Julie! While some countries have closed their airspace (Israel) and some close it intermittently (like Jordan), you should be fine through major hubs like Doha and Dubai. Your airlines are the best point of contact for this though.

Max has asked:

Will Europe get dragged into this war?

No. European leaders have been consistently calling for de-escalation and they’ve got more pressing security concerns in Ukraine.

Deb has asked:

How likely is it that the US will be taken by surprise by Iran’s response, or will they and the rest of us have intelligence before Iran takes an aggressive action?

The US and Israel have some of the best intelligence networks in the world. So based on what we know right now, it’s unlikely they’ll be “taken by surprise” by any Iranian response. It’s not impossible, though.

Aditya S has asked:

What will likely happen to Iran’s proxies, in the event of a regime collapse?

What a great question! It’s complicated. While they’re all similar in some ways, they’re also so different. We don’t have a crystal ball, but here’s what we do know: they’d need to find other funding sources. And, they could become more aggressive right? These groups are super radical. In the same way Iran tells them when to attack, Iran also tells them when not to attack. And when that contraint is lifted, who knows what happens?

I’ll answer your questions while I’m in the shelter

By Riley Stuart in Tel Aviv

It’ll help pass the time.

Patrick has asked:

Given the comments from the PM and foreign minister, seeming to give support for the strikes, could this mean a possible change in the stance of Australia’s involvement in the conflict? Are we now more likely to get involved?

I see how you’ve joined the dots there Patrick, but it’s really important to remember Australia has never given an indication it would join the war in any direct capacity. The likelihood of this hasn’t changed.

Charlie has asked:

If the US joins the war more broadly (potentially after an Iranian response), how likely is it that Iran’s allies get involved and the conflict broadens?

Let’s look at two of Iran’s key allies, the nuclear-armed Russia and China.

Russia is quite preoccupied with its own war at the moment, and their influence in the Middle East is dwindling (the Assad regime in Syria they backed has been toppled, for instance).

China does massive trade with the US every year, so they need to have a bet each way here. Also, they import heaps of oil from Gulf countries that are opposed to Iran’s regime. So don’t expect them to get involved either.

Pakistan said they’d fire nuclear weapons at Israel if Israel used a nuclear weapon on Iran. But there’s no chance of any of that happening.

Stan has said:

Things have come to a pretty pass when Kim Jong Un sounds like the voice of reason.

I’ll take that as a comment!
