FRISCO — When FC Dallas forward Samuel Sarver drew a penalty kick in the 86th minute, the crowd erupted as Sarver motioned for them to get louder at Toyota Stadium. Dallas already led by two goals, and the crowd obliged with a roar when Petar Musa scored the penalty to secure the 3-0 win against St. Louis City SC.
FCD (6-7-10, 32 points), which won its first home game since March 29, remains 13th in the Western Conference after beating the 14th-place team. Saturday’s win was only the second home win for FCD, putting them four points away from a spot in the playoffs.
For the first time this season, FCD wore the “Legacy Kit,” an inverse of the team’s 1998 Dallas Burn home jersey. Six Dallas Burn legends were honored before the game, commemorating 30 years since the team’s inception.
Sports Roundup
The Burn, which became FC Dallas in 2005, played their first game at the Cotton Bowl in 1996 in front of more than 27,000 fans. Mark Dodd, the 1996 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, and Dallas’ all-time leading scorer, Jason Kreis, were among the Burn alumni who returned.
Along with the reunion, FC Dallas owner Dan Hunt cited another reason why the game was important to the team: they were raising money for Central Texas.
“It’s incumbent upon us to step up, raise the funds, raise the awareness and support,” Hunt said. “Bring, hopefully, a respite of joy too in this, but just know that we’re all here for all the victims, and they’re not alone in this.”
Hunt announced that the club, alongside the Houston Dynamo, Austin FC and MLS, has committed $500,000 to charities supporting those affected by the Central Texas floods along the Guadalupe River earlier this month. FCD auctioned off game-worn jerseys and sold limited-edition T-shirts to raise money.
FCD struck first in the 23rd minute on midfielder Kaick Ferreira’s first career goal. Musa settled a cross in the box before touching it back to Ferreira at the top of the box. Ferreira took care of the rest with a shot into the upper right corner past St. Louis goalkeeper Roman Burki.
FCD put the game away in the 79th minute when Musa won a one-on-one with Burki, a little over five minutes before he scored again to make it 3-0.
In their “Legacy Kit” debut and in front of Burn legends, FCD secured a much-needed home win.
