The Colorado Rapids (4-6-1, 13 pts., 9th West) fell on the road to Houston Dynamo FC (5-5-0 15 pts., 8th West) 1-0 on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium.
Heading into their second match against the Dynamo this season, the Rapids were looking to recreate their first performance against Houston that resulted in a 6-2 victory at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.
The first half of Saturday night’s match didn’t see much action on either end, with both sides playing strong defense.
The Rapids maintained a majority of the possession in the match, leaving Houston with little to no opportunity to create any meaningful attacks.
The two sides went into the halftime break scoreless, looking to break the ice wo sides in the final 45 minutes.
Colorado came out of halftime with an instant attacking opportunity. Combination play from Darren Yapi and Dante Sealy led to the club’s best chance up to that point in the night, but the shot was just saved by the Dynamo goalkeeper.
Despite the Rapids getting more chances in the final third than they did in the first half, it was the Dynamo who would get on the board first in the 72nd minute.
Following a corner kick, the ball rolled out to Lawrence Ennali, who sent in a strike to put his side up 1-0.
Colorado attempted to adjust with a trio of substitutes, looking for some additional reinforcements to the attack.
While they created chances to equalize, the Rapids were unable to find the back of the net, leaving the home side with all three points.
Colorado will shift focus to their next match against St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday, May 9. Kickoff at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park is set for 7:30 p.m. MT with coverage available on Apple TV, Altitude Sports Radio, Tico Sports Spanish Radio, the Colorado Rapids app, and ColoradoRapids.com.
