Aubrey Griffin had to wait over a year to get on the court in a WNBA game.
Unfortunately for the former UConn star, all of that hard work and patience won’t result in a roster spot with the Minnesota Lynx this season.
Griffin was waived by the Lynx on Saturday, after the second week of training camp. It brings an end to a long journey with the team since draft day last year.
The 24-year-old was chosen with the 37th overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, shortly after playing sparingly during UConn’s national title run. Griffin averaged just 11.3 minutes in 16 games for UConn in 2025, but Minnesota took a chance on the 6-2 forward, hoping she’d be able to overcome a litany of injuries.
Griffin spent six years at UConn, redshirting during the 2021-22 season after undergoing surgery to repair a disc injury in her back, and tearing her left ACL midway through 2023-24. She didn’t report to training camp last spring because of lingering issues with her left knee. She had arthroscopic knee surgery last April and spent most of the past year rehabbing.
When she finally made her WNBA preseason debut earlier this month, there were no signs of rust. She scored six points, grabbed two rebounds, had a steal and a block in 15 minutes against Washington on April 25.
Fellow former Husky Caroline Ducharme, who made her preseason debut with the Golden State Valkyries on April 25, was waived last week as teams make cuts to get their rosters down to 12 players.
The WNBA regular season begins Friday, May 8.
