SAN ANTONIO — A couple is suing CPS Energy and two others after they allege a transformer explosion destroyed their Far West Side home back in February.

Court records show Johnny and Irene Sanchez filed a more than $1 million lawsuit on Monday in Bexar County’s 166th District Court. The lawsuit alleges negligence against CPS Energy, KBS Electrical Distributors, Inc., and JSHP Transformer USA Corporation.

On February 7, the San Antonio Fire Department responded to the home on Fillmore near Dugas Drive.

Fire crews arrived to find two cars and a home on fire. At the time, there were no injuries reported.

CPS Energy crews also responded to the scene, where at least 36 customers were without power at the time, according to the CPS Energy Outage Map.

Anthony Sloat, who shared photos of the fire, said he was coming home from church at the time and heard “pops” before the fire broke out.

According to the lawsuit, surveillance video showed the explosion originated at or near a CPS Energy electrical transformer box in the front yard adjacent to the driveway where the couple’s two vehicles were parked.

“Within moments, both vehicles—a Toyota RAV4 and a Chevrolet Silverado—were engulfed in flames,” the lawsuit states.

The couple suffered injuries including smoke inhalation, physical injuries, and psychological trauma, the lawsuit states.

The couple was also displaced from their home, which the lawsuit says sustained “catastrophic structural damage.”

This comes after two residents filed suit against CPS Energy just last month in connection to a series of natural gas explosions on the Northeast Side.
