(New York, New York) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing new backlash after critics circulated a comparison claiming the city spends dramatically more each day on migrants than on veterans.

The numbers have struck a nerve because they touch two major pressure points in New York politics: the ongoing cost of the migrant crisis and the treatment of Americans who served in uniform. Critics argue the city has moved with far more urgency to fund shelter and services for migrants than it has to support struggling veterans.

Mamdani’s supporters are likely to push back by saying the two spending categories are different and that emergency shelter costs cannot be compared directly to veteran programs. But opponents say that argument misses the larger point. To them, the budget reflects priorities.

The controversy is now another political headache for Mamdani as critics accuse City Hall of putting illegal immigrants ahead of veterans, taxpayers and longtime New Yorkers.
