CHICAGO — Buckingham Fountain will be turned on for the season this weekend with live music and dance performances in Grant Park.

You can also do free yoga in Unity Park, catch a matinee of the “House On Mango Street” ballet, shop a yard sale in Kilbourn Park or head to special movie screenings of “Almost Famous” and “Hekla.”

Meet A Scientist: Caribbean Fossils

11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday

Field Museum, 1400 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Near South Side

Lazaro W. Vinola Lopez, research scientist, and Ken Marks, a fossil preparator, will be at the Field Museum to share more about the unexpected animals scientists have discovered during their excavations in the Caribbean Islands. The Meet a Scientist program is included with general admission.

‘Almost Famous’ Screening

Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, 2320 W. Chicago Ave., Ukrainian Village

Ladies Who Lit and the Art Idiot are hosting an after-hours screening of the 2000 hit “Almost Famous” in partnership with the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Before the film, attendees can get a special look into the museum’s current exhibit, “L.A. Woman,” a memorial to actress Irene Antonovych, before it closes on May 10. There will also be free beer and water, and other concessions are available to buy.

Pilsen Perro, an environmental community organization, is throwing its Sombremesa Night, a fundraiser evening full of board games, cafecito, crafts and fun. There will also be a selection of drinks, special food items and pastries to keep the night of meaningful conversation and relaxation going.

Author Victoria Granacki is headed to the Edgewater Public Library to share the story of her father’s service in the South Pacific during World War II. Granacki’s new book follows her father, a Polish-American Chicagoan, as he served as General MacArthur’s mapmaker. ‘The House On Mango Street’ Ballet

Chicago-born Mexican-American Author Sandra Cisnero’s novel “The House on Mango Street” has been adapted into a ballet and will take the stage at the Logan Center for the Arts. Bow & Arrow Brewing Co., the nation’s first Native American woman-owned craft brewery, is headed to Suncatcher Brewing for an evening of conversation about what beer can represent. ‘Hekla’ Premiere

“Hekla,” a film by Chicago filmaker Michael Glover Smith, is hitting the big screen with a premiere Sunday at the Music Box. Smith’s fifth feature-length film was shot in Chicago, with an entire Chicago-based cast and crew to create the comedy/drama about pursuing a creative life.
