Today’s Big Stories

1. Jury rules in LA’s favor in accidental shooting of teen at Burlington store

A jury Thursday ruled in favor of the city of Los Angeles in a lawsuit brought by the parents of a teen girl accidentally shot by a Los Angeles police officer in a North Hollywood clothing and home accessories store in 2021.

The 14-year-old girl, Valentina Orellana-Peralta, was killed Dec. 23, 2021, while shopping with her mother for Christmas dresses at the Burlington store at 12121 Victory Blvd. The girl was in a second-floor dressing room when a bullet fired by Officer William Dorsey Jones passed through a wall and struck her.

The plaintiffs were Valentina’s father and mother, Juan Pablo Orellana Larenas and Soledad Peralta.

Police had gone into the store in search of a suspect who assaulted multiple people with a metal bicycle lock. That suspect, 24-year-old Daniel Elena Lopez, was also killed. Police said at the time that a bullet Jones fired ricocheted off the floor, passed through dressing room wall and struck Valentina.

2. LA seeks additional time to respond to former fire chief’s retaliation suit

The city of Los Angeles is asking a judge for more time to respond in court to a lawsuit filed by Former Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley, who was ousted by Mayor Karen Bass in the aftermath of the deadly 2025 Palisades Fire and has sued the city over her termination.

In her Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit filed Feb. 20, Crowley alleges retaliation in violation of the Labor Code and retaliation in violation of the state Constitution. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

In court papers filed Wednesday with Judge Kristin S. Escalante, the City Attorney’s Office notes that its response to Crowley’s suit was due April 9. However, given that the determination was made that private attorneys should handle the defense, scheduling issues have made it impossible for the City Council to select the law firm from among the bidders until after the June 2 primary election.

The city is asking that the time to respond to the Crowley suit be extended to June 27 and Crowley’s attorney are not objecting to the delay.
