Celebrate Juneteenth with NBC 5, Telemundo 39, and Unity Unlimited, Inc. as we honor Dr. Opal Lee at Opal’s Walk for Freedom at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, at Will Rogers Square in Fort Worth.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and traces its origin to Texas, where 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, freedom of enslaved people was enforced.
This year’s scenic 2.5 mile walk starts at Will Rogers Square in Fort Worth and goes through the cultural district passing by the Botanic Garden, Dickie’s Arena, The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, The Kimbell Art Museum, and Casa Mañana.
Dr. Opal Lee, also known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” made history when Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021. As a retired schoolteacher and counselor, the 99-year-old social activist started a movement to make Juneteenth an official federal holiday and was honored as a 2022 Nobel Peace Prize nominee. She is committed to her mission to educate others about Juneteenth and is an inspiration to all.
Join us at Will Rogers Square on June 19th and walk in-person. Prefer not to walk? Then join the fun and celebrate on the 50-yard line of Farrington Field with a spectator ticket.
