SAN ANTONIO – Waymo says it has recovered one of its self-driving vehicles after it was swept into a flooded roadway during recent heavy rain, prompting the company to temporarily pause operations in the city.

In a statement, a Waymo spokesperson confirmed the vehicle involved in the incident was unoccupied at the time.

The incident happened during a period of heavy rainfall, when the autonomous vehicle entered a flooded crossing and was pulled into an active waterway.

Waymo says it coordinated with local authorities to recover the vehicle and has since successfully retrieved it.

The company initially suspended service citywide following the incident out of an abundance of caution as crews assessed road safety conditions.
