Today’s Big Stories

1. Metro opens D Line extension, including 3 new stations

The first phase of Metro’s long-awaited D (Purple) Line subway extension opened Friday, adding three new stations along the Mid- Wilshire corridor and expanding rail service west from Koreatown.

Metro officials, elected leaders and community members — including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and county Supervisor Lindsey Horvath — gathered Friday morning for an opening celebration on the roof of the Petersen Automotive Museum, located steps from the new Wilshire/Fairfax subway station. The ceremony came after the various dignitaries rode on the inaugural train through the extended subway corridor.

Passenger service to the new stations began at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The first phase of the project brought stops at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega, providing a direct rail link from downtown Los Angeles to the edge of Beverly Hills.

The second phase of the subway extension, tentatively set to open in spring 2027, will add stations in Beverly Hills and Century City. The third phase, tentatively planned for fall 2027, will add stations at UCLA and the VA hospital.

The overall extension effort is expected to cost nearly $10 billion.

2. GM will pay California $12.75M for selling driver location and behavior data

General Motors will pay $12.75 million to settle a California consumer protection lawsuit that alleged the company illegally sold drivers’ behavior and location data, the state’s attorney general announced Friday.

The settlement requires GM to stop selling driver data to consumer reporting agencies, including data brokers, for five years and to delete any driving data within 180 days except for limited internal uses.

“We’re talking about data that not only shows how a person drove but also precisely where they drove, which could easily be used to paint a picture of their everyday habits and movements,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta said at a news conference announcing the largest Consumer Privacy Act penalty in the state’s history.

3. Evidence points to human remains at home linked to Kristin Smart’s killing, sheriff says

A California sheriff says that evidence suggests human remains were present at a home connected to the man convicted of killing 19-year-old college student Kristin Smart in 1996. San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said Friday that they cannot say whether the remains are those of Smart.

The office served a warrant this week on the home of Susan Flores but has not said what prompted the search.

Her son Paul Flores was convicted in 2022 of killing Smart, whose body was never found. Scientists took soil samples from outside the house and in a neighbor’s yard this week.

In Case You Missed It

In “Is God Is,” two sisters embark on a quest for revenge, but must confront a family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths.

“Is God Is” marks Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut, and the film is based on the adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name. For Harris, the film is a chance to invite more audiences to join Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson) on their epic road trip to their destiny.

Playing the twin’s mother, also known as Ruby the God, is Vivica A. Fox. In the film, her final wish is for her daughters to kill their father in revenge. “Make your daddy dead. Real dead,” she tells them.

In reflecting upon her character, Fox told Spectrum News that as a survivor of domestic violence, playing Ruby the God was a healing process that she was glad to help expose and bring to the screen.
