SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fire crews battled a major blaze Saturday morning at the San Diego Mission Bay Boat & Ski Club, leaving the building with significant damage and prompting a safety closure.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials, a call came in around 4 a.m. reporting smoke and flames at the club, which is located at 2606 N. Mission Bay Drive.

Responding crews found an active fire in the rear patio area of the building. The fire had also spread into the structure and in a concealed space between the roof and attic.

“There was a fire that was trapped and burning in there for quite a while, so we did have some difficulty accessing it,” said SDFD Battalion Chief James Diaz.

The hidden fire in the roof area caused structural damage that led to a partial collapse on one side of the building.

“The aggressive efforts of our first responding fire officers and firefighters were able to limit the damage,” Diaz said. “We were able to protect most of the structure interior.”

Despite the intensity of the blaze, no injuries were reported.

“There are a lot of boats on this property,” Diaz continued. “Fortunately, our crews did a great job of confining the fire to the building area of origin and it did not extend to any other structures.”

Officials said the building will be “red tagged,” meaning it has been deemed unsafe to occupy due to the extent of the damage both inside and outside the structure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. SDFD’s Metro Arson Strike Team was called to the scene and is working to determine a cause, point of origin and a damage estimate.

About 80 personnel responded to the scene. Firefighters are expected to remain at the club through the morning and into the early afternoon, monitoring hotspots to ensure the fire was fully contained.
