SAN ANTONIO — A woman injured in the 2024 shootout during Fiesta de los Reyes has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1 million in damages against Fiesta organizers and the City of San Antonio.

According to the lawsuit filed April 27 in Bexar County’s 45th District Court, Nadia Alvarez alleges that negligence by event organizers and city officials contributed to the gunfire that erupted during the annual Fiesta celebration at Market Square.

The suit names Fiesta San Antonio Commission Inc., Consejo Real de Reyes Feos Anteriores Inc., and City of San Antonio as defendants.

The lawsuit states Alvarez was attending Fiesta de Los Reyes on April 28, 2024, when a “shootout involving two patrons and security officers” broke out in a crowded festival area.

The incident left two people dead and at least five others injured.

Alvarez alleges she was struck by a stray bullet during the exchange of gunfire and suffered serious injuries. The lawsuit claims security officers provided by the city acted “with conscious indifference or reckless disregard for the safety of others” by allegedly provoking or prolonging the shooting in a crowded public event.

The filing argues that organizers knew the event faced recurring threats from criminal activity and firearms-related violence based on prior incidents in and around Market Square during Fiesta celebrations. Despite those concerns, the lawsuit claims the defendants failed to ban firearms, use metal detectors, establish controlled entry points, or provide adequate security measures.

Among the allegations listed in the complaint are failure to provide adequate security, failure to implement firearm restrictions, failure to warn attendees of potential dangers, and the discharge of firearms in a crowded public setting.

Alvarez is seeking damages for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement, physical impairment, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, and medical expenses. She has also requested a jury trial.
