Plans for mitigating sound in nearby housing developments, refurbishing on-base housing and a visit by the Blue Angels next year were all on the agenda when the Regional Coordination Committee for the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth met April 27.

The committee, known as the RCC, is tasked with helping preserve NAS JRB Fort Worth as a strategic military asset while enhancing the economy and quality of life in surrounding communities. The panel’s quarterly meeting provides a chance for community representatives to discuss nearby land development. Development recommendations compatible with the base were made in a recent land use study.

Voting members of the RCC include two government representatives each from Fort Worth, River Oaks, Lake Worth, Benbrook, Westworth Village, White Settlement, Sansom Park and greater Tarrant County.

Amanda Wilson, senior program manager for the North Central Texas Council of Governments, presented the proposed scope of a future Department of Defense-funded joint land use implementation grant that will be a follow-up effort to tasks completed under a 2020-2024 grant.

The proposed grant included development of a master plan for the former Cowtown BBQ site at the south end of the base property, identification of infill sites around the base with development or redevelopment potential, creation of best practices for notifying residents of noise impacts, establishment of a sound mitigation certification program for homebuilders, and numerous base infrastructure improvements.

Another item under consideration is the planned relocation of six CH-47 Chinook helicopters, maintenance and support equipment and personnel from the Dallas Naval Air Station, also known as Hensley Field, to NAS JRB Fort Worth. The timing is unclear at the moment, but the move would likely not occur until after 2030.

In other RCC business, Dan Kessler, acting director of transportation for the North Central Texas Council of Governments, provided a summary of a groundbreaking ceremony conducted earlier in the day for a road improvement project in River Oaks. U.S. Marine Corps Col. David Tumanjan gave an update on the recruiting duties performed by the 8th Marine Corps District under his command.

The meeting closed with an update from the base commander, U.S. Navy Capt. Beau Hufstetler. He outlined current priorities, including working with Oncor on a new electrical switching substation for additional power capacity and redundancy, aircraft fuel facility improvements, additional security measures for flightline access, and refurbishment of on-base housing.

Upcoming activities on base include a Navy 10 Miler run on May 9, FreedomFest fireworks on the Fourth of July, and an air show planned for April 2027 that will feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team.
