ELON, N.C. –College of Charleston baseball defeated Elon, 11-1, in seven innings Saturday evening at Latham Park.The Cougars collected 16 hits in the victory as they improve to 24-25 overall and 14-12 in the CAA. With the loss, Elon slips to 19-30 and 10-19 in the conference.Graduate Kurt Rogers hurled a career-best 6.0 shutout innings, earning his fifth win of the year.
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST ELON:
- Graduate Will Tippett started the offensive onslaught with a leadoff homer in the third, his second shot in as many days.
- The Cougars added two more runs in the frame to make it 3-0.
- CofC then doubled its lead in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from graduate Reece Holbrook and sophomore Alex LaCoste.
- Sophomore Nick Diaz launched a two-run shot in the fifth to make it an 8-0 ballgame.
- Holding an 8-1 lead in the seventh, LaCoste drew a bases loaded walk before redshirt senior Ethan Plyler drove in two on a single up the middle to put the run rule into effect.
- Rogers allowed an unearned run on just two hits while striking out four.
- Freshman Kaden Myers tossed a scoreless seventh, inducing a game-ending double play.
- Five different Cougars had multi-hit performances with Tippett going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston is now 49-33 versus Elon and 20-12 on the road.
- Rogers’ six innings were a career best.
- Plyler picked up his team-best 10th multi-RBI game.
- Graduate Dylan Johnson recorded his 11th double in conference play, the most by a Cougar since Nick Pappas had 15 during the 2015 campaign.
