People have about a month to comment on a proposal currently before government to construct a gold mine just east of Appleton in central Newfoundland.

New Found Gold Corp. says the Queensway Gold Project represents a transition from several years of exploration at the site to full-scale mining.

The project involves the development of four open pits, a waste rock storage facility, ore stockpiles, a crushing and sorting plant and access roads. The ore would be shipped to the Pine Cove facility on the Baie Verte Peninsula.

More than 200 full-time positions will be created during the 4-6 month construction period while about 230 people will be needed full-time during the operational phase.

The deadline for public comment is June 12 and the minister’s decision is expected by June 21.
