SPRING, Texas – Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a fatal rollover crash early Sunday in Spring.

Dispatch received an alert about the crash around 3:40 a.m. this morning in the 26000 block of Lexington Road, where deputies found a red Tesla in a ditch on the southbound side of the roadway, according to HCSO.

Investigators said the driver — described as a man in his 20s — was traveling at a high rate of speed when he didn’t make the turn and left the roadway. The vehicle rolled about three times through a ditch, and struck a tree. Airbags deployed in the crash, and EMS used the Jaws of Life rescue device to remove the driver after the Tesla’s electric doors would not open.

The driver was transported to HCA Houston Northwest, where he was pronounced dead around 4:45 a.m. Officials said it is not known whether the vehicle’s self-driving capability was in use at the time of the crash.

The incident is being handled by HCSO.
