SAN ANTONIO – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Bexar County and surrounding areas through midnight.

Storms are developing north of the region near the I-20 corridor ahead of a south-moving cold front and are expected to reach the San Antonio area later this evening.

The Storm Prediction Center continues to place San Antonio under a level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk. Areas just to the north remain under a higher level 3 risk, while locations to the south are under a level 1 risk.

The main threat with these storms will be strong wind gusts, especially in clusters or lines of storms. Hail is considered a secondary threat, though stronger storms could still produce some hail.

Areas north of the region face a greater risk for damaging winds and larger hail, particularly for those traveling in that direction later today.

The primary window for storms in the San Antonio area is between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., with northern counties possibly seeing activity begin slightly earlier. After 1 a.m., storms are expected to move south and exit the area, bringing lower humidity and slightly cooler conditions for Monday.

Rainfall totals will vary, with some areas seeing as little as a tenth of an inch, while others could receive more than an inch under heavier downpours.
