A high school student has suffered a serious injury after falling from a platform and becoming trapped underneath a train for an hour at North Melbourne station.
Emergency services were called to the “traumatic scene” on Monday afternoon to rescue the boy, who is a year 7 student at nearby St Aloysius College in North Melbourne.

The student was transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious lower-body injuries.
Ambulance Victoria paramedic Alex Hemsley said that there were “traumatic events” in the lead up to the lengthy extrication process, which required a multi-agency response and eight paramedics working simultaneously.
“The extrication was lengthy, lasting between 45 minutes to an hour. However, we were safely able to get the young person to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” Hemsley said.
“Although we are all trained to do this job, [it was a] very traumatic scene for all involved.
“[First responders] did a fantastic job … they provided the highest level of care to this young person on potentially one of the most traumatic days of their lives.”
A letter from St Aloysius principal Mary Farah was sent out to parents on Monday afternoon, confirming that a serious incident had occurred but saying that details were limited.
“At approximately 4pm today, we received reports that one of our year 7 students was involved in an accident at North Melbourne Train Station. At this stage, we have very few specific details regarding the circumstances or the student’s current condition,” the letter said.
“Events like this can be deeply unsettling for our young people. Please be mindful of your child’s wellbeing this evening.”
A second email was sent later in the evening, directing families to mental health support services.
“Some students witnessed this incident, and college staff arrived shortly after to support students, and the family of the student involved, who is currently recovering in hospital,” the email said.
The incident impacted train services across the network, with large crowds of commuters waiting at Southern Cross Station shortly before 6pm. The disruption also impacted some V/Line services towards Geelong.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transport said that there were some minor delays and cancellations on the Werribee, Craigburn and Upfield lines shortly after 4pm, along with some impacted services on the Frankston line.
